Lady Tigers tie with Huron

• The Groton Lady Tigers soccer team traveled to Huron on Friday to play the Lady Broncos of Belle Fourche.  The tradition of rough and tumble soccer continued in what has become and ongoing battle between the two schools.
• The game remained scoreless for most of the first half with Groton needing to weather a number of Belle attacks.  At about the 25 minute mark, Bell was able to punch in a shot from inside the 18 yard line and took a 1-0 lead.  Approximately 5 minutes later the Lady Tigers were able to put together an attack and forced a corner kick.  On the set play Cheyenne Schaller was able to bend a shot into the far corner of the Belle goal and tied the game at one.  The half ended in a tie.
• The second half had both teams making runs with Groton missing three opportunities inside the 18 yard box in the final 10 minutes.  Marlee Jones played goalie for the Tigers the entire game.  The offense was led by Madison Profeta with 2 shots, and additional shots taken by Emily Locke, Harleigh Winther, Mikki Kavanaugh and Cheyenne Schaller.
• The Lady Tigers next travel to play Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday for a 1 pm game.  They will then have a well-deserved 10 day rest to recuperate and recover for the final season push.

Junior high gridiron teams beat Sisseton

• The Groton seventh graders opened the season with a 36-0 win over Sisseton. Scoring touchdowns and extra points for the Tigers were Seric Shabaz, Anthony Sippel, Andy Rintala, and Jackson Oliver. Marshall Lane chipped in with a long run. The offensive and defensive lines were led by Luke Thorson, Miguel Vargas, Brandyn Anderson, Hunter Monson, and Brandon Keith.
• On defense, leading tacklers wer Seric Shabaz and Brandon Keith.
• The eighth graders defeated Sisseton, 12 - 0.  Both touchdowns for Groton came on long touchdown passes from Kelby Hawkins to Patrick Gengerke. Both times the conversions failed.
• The defensive line of Shane Simon, Nick Menzia, McClain Lone, Joe Groeblinghoff, and Nathan Fjelstad did a good job up front getting in there and disrupting the Redmen offense that led to a shutout. Reed Sattler also had an interception on defense.
