Kinney Fire in South Dakota 75 percent contained

• CUSTER, S.D. (AP) -- Crews have contained 75 percent of the 2 ½-square-mile Kinney Fire in the Black Hills National Forest in southwestern South Dakota.
• Officials say extremely dry conditions and difficult terrain have hampered the firefighting effort, but cooler temperatures, calmer winds and the arrival of additional firefighters Thursday helped. Full containment is expected by Sunday.
• The cause of the blaze that began Tuesday northeast of Newcastle, Wyo., has not been determined. The blaze has destroyed two outbuildings and resulted in one minor injury.

SD grants available for rural youth groups

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Agriculture has money available for grants to help rural youth organizations with projects aimed at improving communities or enhancing public safety.

• Grants are open to 4-H clubs, FFA chapters and Family Career and Community Leaders of America chapters.
• Basic grants are limited to $750 and can be used for community improvement projects. Safety grants are limited to $200 and can be used for projects that enhance public safety.
• Department officials say the grants were developed to demonstrate the importance of rural communities and the value of organizations that work to improve rural life.

Daugaard to chair NGA natural resources committee

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has been selected as chairman of the National Governor's Association's natural resources committee.
