Safe Route to School to be reconsidered

• The Safe Route to School grant was given a reconsideration at Monday night's city council meeting. Dorene Nelson and Steve Smith both came before the council to discuss the need for the sidewalk. They apologized for not being at the hearing, but were instructed to be at the school open house.
• Nelson asked if it is still possible to do it where people want it instead of doing everyone. Smith said he had to do curb and gutter as part of the Main Street project, so he asked if the policy was changed.
• Smith said his kids walk to school and it would be nice to use sidewalks on the way to school.
• Mayor Roy Olson said the council should rescind the motion from the previous hearing and "to see what we can do." The council was split on the decision with the mayor casting the aye vote. Councilmen Eddy Opp, Doug Hamilton and Gary Heitmann voted no.
• There will be no fireworks after the homecoming football game. The request was withdrawn after the individual reviewed the list of eight questions and said it was too many questions.
• Mayor Olson thanked Modern Woodman for the donation of $500 which will be used for trees next year.
• Kay Brandt talked about her broken curb. It is cracked and chipped at every seam.  Her curb and gutter is nine years old and is broken up very badly. She, along with Jerome Wieseler, said that Fifth Avenue West has a lot of traffic, especially in the summer with the baseball program. They would like to see that road done as soon as possible to preserve the curb and gutter along that stretch.
• David Larson said he has been patient with this for five years. I'm looking to keep this in the budget and to get it done. Olson said if the drain was to be put in, the curb and gutter should be done on the east side of Sixth Street. Jon Voss was also present to discuss the drainage. Voss said that he should cement his driveway to the property line to be safe instead of all of the way to the street.
• Later in the council, it was decided to approve the street project engineering for Ninth Avenue from Third Street to Sixth Street, Eighth Avenue from Fourth Street to Sixth Street, Fifth Avenue from Fourth Street to Sixth Avenue, Fifth Street from Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue, Fifth Street from Eighth Avenue to Ninth Avenue, and Sixth Street from 13th Avenue to 16th Avenue on the east side. Sixth Street will include curb and gutter on the east side and storm sewer south of 16th Avenue. This is scheduled for the 2013 project. In addition, curb and gutter will need to be installed
