SD Labor Day travel expected to be up 3 percent

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers are out in force during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
• The agency is conducting a "saturation patrol" involving nearly all officers to encourage safe driving. It is the end of a summer-long campaign aimed at cracking down on drunken driving, speeding and seatbelt violations.
• "If we want to change driving habits, we need to give frequent reminders," Patrol

Superintendent Col. Craig Price said.
• Gov. Dennis Daugaard also issued a statement urging South Dakota motorists to use care when traveling this weekend. Ten people have been killed and nearly 250 others injured in crashes on South Dakota roads during the past five Labor Day weekends.
• About 69,000 state residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend, up 3 percent from last year, according to AAA South Dakota.
• "Despite the rather feeble national economy and recent rises in South Dakota's (gas) prices, consumer confidence appears to be driving this increase in holiday travel," AAA spokeswoman Marilyn Buskohl, said. "Plus, the enticing prospect of one more road trip before winter is apparently proving too alluring to resist."
