Tribal leaders holding teach-in about SD land

• EAGLE BUTTE, S.D. (AP) -- A group spearheading an effort to buy land in South Dakota that Native American tribes consider sacred is holding a teach-in on Saturday during the annual Cheyenne River Sioux powwow.
• Last Real Indians founder Chase Iron Eyes says in a news release that he and tribal leaders and activists will talk about the issue at 5 p.m. at the HVJ Lakota Cultural Center in Eagle Butte.
• Last Real Indians and tribes of the Great Sioux Nation have been raising money to try to buy nearly 2,000 acres of land in the Black Hills. The tribes consider the site key to their creation story, and members fear new owners would develop the land

they call Pe' Sla (pay shlaw).
• Following an outcry, a public auction for the land was cancelled.

Coyotes open 2012 season against Montana

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- The University of South Dakota opens its 2012 season Saturday afternoon against 10th-ranked Montana.
• The unranked Coyotes take on the Grizzlies at 1:30 p.m. MDT at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. South Dakota is embarking on its first season as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
• Montana leads the series 9-6. The teams last met in 1999, with Montana topping South Dakota 45-13 in Mizzoula.
• The game will be televised in-state on KDLT and KOTA's MeTV.

Sioux Falls hosting national slow pitch tournament

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Softball players from eight states are converging in Sioux Falls this weekend for a national tournament.
• South Dakota's largest city is hosting the ASA Slow Pitch Men's E/Recreational Northern National Championship. The tournament is expected to attract more than 45 teams from eight states.
• The tournament starts Saturday at 8 a.m. and finishes with the championship game on Sunday afternoon. It is being held at Harmodon Park.
• Admission is free.
