2 people killed in 1-car crash near Martin

• MARTIN, S.D. (AP) -- Two people have died and two people received life-threatening injuries in a one-vehicle crash near Martin.
• The South Dakota Highway Patrol says 44-year-old Marvin Poorbear of Springfield, S.D., was driving east on U.S. Highway 18 early Monday morning when he lost control of the vehicle and it rolled. Poorbear, who was wearing a seatbelt, was killed. Three passengers who were not wearing seatbelts were thrown from the vehicle.

• Twenty-three-year-old Melisa Cummings of Martin died. The other two passengers were taken to a Sioux Falls hospital.
• Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Jackley seeks October execution date for Robert

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota State Penitentiary inmate who killed a prison guard could be put to death in about two months.
• Attorney General Marty Jackley has asked a judge to set an execution date for 50-year-old Eric Robert the week of Oct. 14.
• Robert pleaded guilty to killing guard Ron Johnson during a failed escape attempt last year and asked to be put to death. He was to be executed by lethal injection in May but the state Supreme Court postponed the execution so it could do a mandatory review of the sentence. The high court last Thursday unanimously upheld the death sentence.
• A second inmate involved in the escape attempt also has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to death, but is appealing. A third inmate was given a life sentence.

Jackley unhappy with plan for surplus river water
