2012-2013 GROTON AREA "BACK TO SCHOOL"
INFORMATION

Groton Area School District 06-6 - "Mission Statement"
Each school will foster a school climate conducive to learning by encouraging good behavior and citizenship, good attendance, a thirst for knowledge, and high academic standards.  Teachers will employ strategies and approaches to instruction to meet the needs of all children assigned to them.  With proper motivation and instruction, all children can learn!

Superintendent Schuster's Comments
Each year we ask the professional staff to demand excellence from our students, both in the classroom and in co-curricular activities, based upon the student's ability to perform.  It is equally important that parents emphasize the value of a quality education and, in cooperation with school staff, are dedicated to helping each child reach his/her potential.

Next Generation Accountability Model
The South Dakota Department of Education applied for a Flexibility Waiver of the "No Child Left Behind Act" from the U.S. Dept. of Education.  The waiver was approved in late June.  What this means is that all public school districts in South Dakota will be using a new model of accountability.  This new model takes a balanced approach to defining the indicators of a strong education system.  The model will continue to hold schools accountable for student proficiency and closing achievement gaps through annual public reporting.  It will be based on the following key indicators:  student achievement, high school completion or academic growth (elementary & middle school), college and career readiness (high school) or attendance (elementary & middle school), effective teachers and principals, and school climate.

Teacher Qualifications
All teachers of core academic subjects must hold at least a bachelor's degree, have full state certification, and demonstrate knowledge in the core academic subjects they teach.  For information regarding your child's teachers' qualifications, you may contact the superintendent's office at 397-2351.
