Groton ready for the new school year

• Soccer is making a smooth transition into the Groton School sports program, this was the message to the Groton School Board members at the Monday regular meeting.
• Duane Kavanaugh and Mike Becker spoke to the board members about the soccer program for the 2012-2013 school year. The program has sold sponsorships and will run the concession stand during the games to help support the program. There is still a few rough spots to work out yet. The field isn't set up for taking tickets. The fence doesn't surround the field, so the soccer program is looking at placing storm fencing around the north side of the field. This will be the first year for soccer to be a sanctioned high school sport. There are 22 girls and 17 boys out this year. They will play their first game on August 21 in Rapid City against St. Thomas Moore. They will play their first home game on August 30 against Mitchell.
• Darielle Harrington talked about the Cheerleading program. She will coach the basketball cheerleaders while Tammy Weiszhaar and Kelli Hanson will coach the football cheerleaders and Ann Thorson may coach the wrestling cheerleaders. All 17 cheerleading slots have been filled. One cost saving measure the cheerleaders are using this year is that each cheerleader will purchase their own uniform and warm-ups instead of the school purchasing them as they have in the past. This way the uniforms should fit better and eliminates the problem of getting the uniforms turned in at the end of the season. The program has the funding in place to cover
