Events celebrating anniversary of Oahe Dam planned

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota State Historical Society is offering three programs this week to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Oahe Dam.
• The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed and built the dam starting in 1948. It was dedicated on Aug. 17, 1962.
• On Friday, the Historical Society is presenting images of the Oahe Dam construction at 4 p.m. at the Cultural Heritage Center. This follows the main event scheduled at 11 a.m. At 9 a.m. Saturday, a reception for the workers who constructed the dam and their families will be held at the Cultural Heritage Center. Also on Saturday, film footage of the Missouri River closing operations, the power plant

construction and other events will be shown at the State 123 Theatre in Pierre.

National Guard unit returns to wildfire fighting

• CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The 145th Airlift Wing of the North Carolina Air National Guard is resuming fighting wildfires in the West, six weeks after four of the unit's airmen died while fighting a fire in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
• The unit's operations commander, Col. Roger Williams, says it's important for the Charlotte-based unit to get back to the critical mission.
• The 145th will send two aircraft and 16 airmen to Boise, Idado. They will fight fires at the direction of the U.S. Forest Service starting Tuesday.
• Three groups of North Carolina airmen will rotate from Charlotte to Boise and back through Sept. 4.
• A C-130 equipped with a firefighting system was battling a fire near Edgemont, S.D., on July 1 when it crashed, killing four and severely injuring two others.

Patrol says 9 people died during Sturgis rally

• STURGIS, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Highway Patrol says nine people died at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which officially ended on Sunday.
• The Patrol says eight people died in fatal accidents, including an Oakes, N.D., woman who was killed Friday when her motorcycle struck a pickup truck driven by a Colorado man.
