Big fourth inning rally gives Groton fifth place trophy

• Groton scored 10 runs in the fourth inning with the help of three errors and five hits as the Groton Teeners defeated Vermillion in the consolation championship game, 11-1, in five innings.
• Vermillion started off the first inning with Peter Haught getting on base with an error, but he would not score.
• Parker Rossow would get a nice hit to left field to get on base for Groton in the bottom of the first inning. Rossow would score when Spencer Knecht hit a stand-up double as Groton took the lead, 1-0.
• Vermillion's first two batters were walked in the top of the second. Two wild pitches allowed the runners to advance twice with Justin Bendesky scoring to tie the game.
• Groton had three up and three down in the bottom of the second as did Vermillion in the top of the third.
• Spencer Knecht got on base via an error in the bottom of the third, but would remain stranded on second.
• Vermillion had a one-two-three inning in the top of the fourth.
• Groton's big rally came in the fourth, scoring 10 runs on five hits and there were three errors.
• Mason Madsen would have a lead-off double and would score later when Nick Dalchow got on base with an error. Logan Lane would have a single and Alec Oleson was walked to load the bases. Drew Planteen had a single to score Dalchow. Parker Rossow had a three RBI double to score Lane, Oleson and Planteen. Spencer Knecht hit one to center field for a double to score Rossow. At this point, Vermillion would change pitchers.
• Kasey Kurtz and Mason Madsen were both walked to load the bases. Jackson Doeden got on base with an error and that allowed Knecht to score. Nick Dalchow had a single to score Albrecht and Madsen. Alec Oleson got on base with an error and Doeden scored. Drew Planteen was walked before the side was retired as Groton took an 11-1 lead.
• One batter was walked for Vermillion in the top of the fifth, but the highlight was when Luke Sternhagen made a diving catch at second to get an out.
• Groton won the consolation game while Parkston defeated Hartford/Humboldt for third, 9-8, and Madison defeated Tabor in the championship game, 11-8.
• Saturday's scores were Vermillion beating Big Stone City/Ortonville, 2-0, Groton defeated Dakota Valley, 4-3, Madison beat Parkston, 8-7, and Tyndall defeated Hartford/Humboldt, 14-2.
