Woman dead after crashing car into Mitchell pond

• MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) -- An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death for a woman whose car crashed into a pond in Mitchell.
• Police say the car driven by 61-year-old Jane Strong, of rural Mitchell, veered off the road Thursday afternoon, crashed into a sign and a van in a hotel parking lot, jumped a curb, drove over grass and into the pond, where it sank into 18 feet of water.
• It took emergency crews nearly three hours to remove the car. Strong was pronounced dead at the scene.


SD board approves new health degree at BHSU

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Black Hills State University will begin offering a new associate degree for students who may eventually want a bachelor's degree in nursing or other health care professions.
• The South Dakota Board of Regents has approved a new associate degree in applied health sciences. Black Hills State will deliver courses for the degree at the University Center located in Rapid City.
• Black Hills State has a history of preparing students for admission into nursing programs offered elsewhere. The new associate degree program will offer students all the general education and core classes required for admission into nursing programs offered at South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota, as well as for other four-year health care programs.

SD judge orders meeting in surgery scars case

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A judge in a civil lawsuit filed by a Native American man who claims the letters KKK were carved into him following surgery at a South Dakota hospital has ordered the two sides to come together to try to come to a resolution in the case.
• Judge Jeffrey Viken ordered lawyers for 69-year-old Vern Traversie and lawyers for the defendants in the case to meet by Sept. 7.
• Traversie is a 69-year-old Lakota man living on the Cheyenne River Reservation
