South Dakota pole vaulter done at Olympics

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota pole vaulter Derek Miles has failed to qualify for the finals at the Olympics.
• Miles competed in the preliminaries in London on Wednesday but did not advance to Friday's finals. He has been hampered in recent months by an Achilles injury that affected his training.
• The Summer Games are the third Olympics for Miles, an assistant track and field coach for the University of South Dakota. He finished seventh in Athens, Greece, in 2004, and fourth in Beijing, China, four years ago.

Mo. River low-water inspection starts Sunday

• KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Mississippi River Commission is planning a low-water inspection trip in the Missouri River Basin.
• The group will hear local residents' concerns on issues ranging from flood control to navigation in a series of meetings. They start Sunday in Bismarck, N.D., and continue Aug. 13 in Fort Pierre, S.D., and Aug. 15 in St. Joseph, Mo. The fourth and last

will be Aug. 16 in Washington, Mo.
• Three of the commission's seven members are officers of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A fourth is from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The other three are civilians, and two of them are civil engineers.
