Fire near Rapid City threatens dozens of homes

• An area resident working on landscaping accidentally started the West Nike Fire on Sunday morning.
• "They had been working out in their yard on a retaining wall and what they were doing caused some sparks, and the fire just took off so quickly from there," said Monica Colby, spokeswoman for the Rapid City Fire Department.
• The fire caused the temporary closure of one road before the 75 city, state, federal and volunteer firefighters who responded to the scene contained it late in the afternoon. It had grown to about three-fourths of a square mile by that point. Some homeowners were told to leave as a precaution.
• "The wind blew the fire away from the homes," Colby said "That gave us a chance to kind of get ahead of it and ... protect the homes."
• The homeowner who touched off the blaze will not be charged, Colby said.
• On Sunday evening, firefighters contained the 25½-acre Bear Gulch Fire in Custer State Park. A road grader sparked the fire on Friday. More than 100 people fought the blaze.
