Speed, alcohol factors in motorcycle rally crashes

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota authorities say speed and alcohol were factors in the first two fatal motorcycle crashes of this year's Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
• The state Public Safety Department says 48-year-old James Mills of New Palestine, Indiana, was killed Sunday when he crashed on U.S. Highway 14 in Spearfish. He applied his brakes, lost control and his motorcycle slid on the road.
• A Minnesota man was killed Sunday on South Dakota Highway 44 when he failed to negotiate a curve and his motorcycle hit a post. His name was not released, pending notification of his family.

• The annual rally officially started Monday and runs through Sunday. Officials expect more than 400,000 bikers will attend the event in the Black Hills.

SD asks flags be half-staff for shooting victims

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard is asking that all flags in South Dakota be flown at half-staff from a.m. until sunset through Friday in respect for victims of the mass shooting at Oak Creek, Wisconsin.
• Daugaard noted that President Barack Obama ordered all flags be lowered to half-staff at all public buildings and grounds and at all military facilities out of respect for those killed and injured in Sunday's attack.
• Six people were killed and three were critically wounded in the shooting.

Aberdeen woman killed in apartment fire

• ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) -- A 47-year-old Aberdeen woman has died in the city's second fatal fire in three days.
• The woman died in an apartment fire that was reported just after midnight Monday.
• Todd Salfrank of Aberdeen Fire and Rescue told the Aberdeen American News (http://bit.ly/Rd5a7g ) that the fire appeared to start in the kitchen of an apartment. He says the flames were contained to the apartment, but there was heavy smoke damage to the apartment and the rest of the building.
• Brown County Coroner Michael Carlsen says the woman's identity will not be released until after family members are notified.
