SD man found dead in Black Hills

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man missing for nearly a week has been found dead in the forest about eight miles north of Nemo.
• The Rapid City Journal (http://bit.ly/RxomKu) reports that authorities believe 59-year-old James Fettig of Nemo died when a tree fell on him while he was cutting firewood in the Black Hills on July 27. Searchers found Fettig's body Thursday.
• Lawrence County Chief Deputy Sheriff Joe Harmon says Fettig was a longtime

resident who had cut firewood for years. He says people who go into the woods by themselves should let someone know where they are going.

Former SD legislator George Shanard dies

• MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) -- Former South Dakota lawmaker George Shanard (SHAN-urd) of Mitchell has died.
• Mike Hettinger, funeral director at Bittner Funeral Chapel, says Shanard died Friday morning at his home. He was 86.
• Shanard served in the state Senate from 1975 to 1992 and was Republican majority leader from 1989 to 1992. He also owned a grain, fertilizer and seed company.
• Dusty Johnson of Mitchell, chief of staff for Gov. Dennis Daugaard, told the Mitchell Daily Republic (http://bit.ly/QqEQae ) that Shanard was a good legislator who worked to solve problems.
• State Sen. Mike Vehle (VAL-ee) of Mitchell says Shanard was not only an effective political leader, but also a good businessman.
• Shanard's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell, with burial at the American Legion Cemetery.
