SD National Guard unit in cooking competition

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota Army National Guard unit based in Pierre is taking part in a national cooking competition.
• The 152nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion recently won a regional con

test against units from North Dakota and Oregon. It now will compete against a half dozen other units around the country in a contest that recognizes excellence in Army food service.
• The competition judges the mess section in categories that include sanitation, food safety, water safety, presentation, portion size, temperature and taste.
• The Pierre unit will be judged Oct. 14 at its armory in Pierre.

SD man gets 30 years in prison for child sex abuse

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 12.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson has announced that 22-year-old Gerard Deshauquette, of Wakpala, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Deshauquette pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated sexual abuse of a child in April.
• Prosecutors say he sexually assaulted a child sometime between November 2009 and November 2011.
• Deshauquette was immediately turned over the U.S. Marshals Service to begin his sentence.

SD farm land value jumped 25 percent in last year

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The average value of South Dakota farm land rose by about 25 percent in the past year.
• The U.S. Agriculture Department reports that the average value of cropland in South Dakota is now $2,320 an acre, up nearly 25 percent from last year's estimate of $1,860 an acre. Nationally, cropland was up 14.5 percent from a year ago to
