SD files brief in Maryland gun-rights case

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota has joined other states in filing a friend-of-the-court brief in a federal appeal involving Maryland's requirements for getting a permit to carry a gun.
• South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the written brief supports a lower court's decision to strike down Maryland's requirement that law abiding citizens must demonstrate a reason for carrying a gun. He says a person who otherwise meets reasonable requirements for getting a gun permit should not have to provide further justification.
• Jackley says requiring a law abiding citizen to provide a reason for carrying a

firearm infringes on the constitutional right to bear arms.

McLaughlin man gets prison for sex abuse charge

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A McLaughlin man has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting a child.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson announced this week that 44-year-old Burton Little Dog was sentenced to 15 years and eight months in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. Little Dog pleaded guilty to a count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child in April.
• Prosecutors say he sexually assaulted a child sometime between December 2004 and April 2006 in Little Eagle.
• Little Dog was immediately turned over the U.S. Marshals Service to begin his sentence.

Head of Mpls. FBI has counterterrorism background

• BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) -- The new head of the FBI's three-state Minneapolis division said Friday that battling terrorism is among his top priorities for the office, which recently handled the high-profile case of Somali refugees convicted of sending money to a group on the U.S. terror list.
• In an interview with The Associated Press, Chris Warrener said his background -- including overseeing terror financing investigations -- makes him a good fit for the FBI division that oversees Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. He
