Annual Oglala Lakota Nation Powwow starts Friday

• PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) -- It's a weekend full of events on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
• The 27th annual Oglala Lakota Nation Powwow and Rodeo in Pine Ridge continues Friday. It runs through Sunday. The event features dancers of all ages perform

ing in a variety of competitions.
• Also starting Friday is the annual Wounded Knee Memorial Motorcycle Run. The motorcycle run seeks to commemorate the Native Americans who were killed at the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. Motorcyclists from across the country take part in the event, which follows the trail of Chief Big Foot. It starts in Fort Yates, N.D., continues to Eagle Butte, S.D., and finishes at Wounded Knee.

SD Rep. Noem says bill helps livestock producers

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Rep. Kristi Noem says the livestock disaster assistance bill passed by the U.S. House is a good first step toward helping South Dakota farmers and ranchers deal with problems caused by the drought.
• But the Republican congresswoman says she will continue trying to persuade House leaders to pass a five-year farm bill because that would be the best way to help livestock producers.
• Noem says she has been working for the past few months to reauthorize the livestock disaster programs that expired last year.
• Noem's opponent in the November election, Democrat Matt Varilek, says Noem and the Republican-controlled House have created uncertainty for farmers and ranchers by failing to pass a new farm bill.
• Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson says the House should pass the farm bill approved by the Senate.
