The Life of Norbert Hearnen

• Memorial Services for Norbert Hearnen, 80, of Conde, will be 10:30 Saturday, August 4 at the Conde United Methodist Church.  The Rev. Matt Richards will officiate.  Inurnment will follow in the Conde City Cemetery.  Military honors will be provided by the Conde American Legion Post #148.
• Visitation will be at the Conde Community Center, Friday, August 3rd from 6:30 - 8:30 with memories at 7:30.
• Norb died July 31, 2012 at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.
• Norb Hearnen was born February 12, 1932, the youngest of seven children, to William and Vera (Wettstein) Hearnen in Turton, SD. At the age of 2, Norb's father Wil

liam passed away.  In 1940, the family moved from their farm near Turton, SD to the Conde area.  Norb attended school in Conde and graduated in 1950. After graduation, he enlisted in Marine Corps and served in Korea.  After returning from the Marines in 1954, Norb enrolled at Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD and graduated with a degree in secondary education.
• On July 3rd, 1957 Norb married Donna Bymers in Conde, SD. In the fall of 1958, they moved to Wilmot, SD for Norb's first teaching job.  After a year in Wilmot, they moved to Appleton, MN where he continued to teach through the spring of 1968. Although Norb had no experience in the sport, he was instrumental in starting the wrestling program in Appleton.
• Every summer from 1963 until the spring of 1968, Norb and his family returned to Conde where he helped his father-in-law, John Bymers, with the farming operation. In the spring of 1968, Norb quit teaching school and moved his family to Conde to take over the farm permanently.
• After moving to Conde, Norb soon became active in a number of organizations. He served on the township board, Conde Board of Education, Conde Civic Development, Farmer's Elevator Board and Methodist Church Board. During his service, the Conde school addition, the Methodist Church and the fertilizer plant were all constructed. He was very involved in American Legion Post 148, where he served in many capacities including Post Commander.
• Norb enjoyed attending his grandchildren's events, rooting for the New York Yankees and playing cards with his friends at Harvey's.  Fishing was his most avid passion.  For a number of years, Norb and Donna had a trailer on the Missouri River near Mobridge. In the last 10 years, he spent a lot of time fishing the many lakes in
