Judge deciding on permit for disputed SD dairy

• ALEXANDRIA, S.D. (AP) -- A judge will decide whether a Hanson County permit for a controversial dairy operation should be canceled because of a lack of progress on the project.
• A citizen group that opposes the planned 7,000-head Hanson County Dairy is challenging the 2007 permit, saying that under county ordinance the permit is invalid if the project hasn't been completed within two years of the permit's issuance. Opponents want Judge Timothy Bjorkman to make the dairy reapply for a permit before construction can begin.
• County Zoning Administrator Mary Wilcox says county officials understood the large project would take longer than two years when they granted the permit.
• The citizen group already has successfully appealed a state water permit for the dairy. The state Water Management Board will hold a new hearing next month.

Former UND hoops star arrested for child support

• GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- Former University of North Dakota basketball standout Jerome Beasley is in trouble again for allegedly not paying child support.
• The 32-year-old Beasley is in custody in Grand Forks, accused of owing more than $100,000 in child support. It was not immediately clear if he had obtained an attorney.
• Beasley was jailed in November 2010 for owing more than $6,650 in support.
• Beasley played for UND in the early 2000s before moving on to a brief NBA career and then stints with the Dakota Wizards and the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Development League. He was named the NCAA Division II player of the year his senior season at UND.

Survey: Drought dragging down Midwest economy

• OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The ongoing drought, combined with global economic turmoil, is hurting business in nine Midwest and Plains states and boosting worries about the possibility of another recession, according to a monthly report released Wednesday.
• The region's overall economic index for July plunged below growth neutral for the
