Former Rapid City mayor apologizes for incident

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Former Rapid City mayor Jim Shaw has apologized for a traffic stop incident that ended with a police officer drawing his gun.
• Shaw says he takes responsibility for what happened, but he also says he doesn't think he was obstructing law enforcement.
• The letter of apology was a requirement of Shaw's sentencing after he pleaded guilty last week to speeding and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. Prosecutors dropped a more serious charge of obstructing a police officer.
• Shaw was pulled over June 5 for speeding. Authorities say he jumped from his

vehicle and refused to obey the officer's commands, resulting in the officer drawing his gun and calling for backup.
• Shaw was mayor of Rapid City for a total of eight years between 1997 and 2007.

SD program awards scholarships to 38 students

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota officials say 38 high school graduates have received scholarships from a program that encourages people to pursue careers in in critically needed occupations.
• The Dakota Corps scholarship program is financed by donations from businesses and non-profit organizations. Students get money to cover tuition and fees as they study to become veterinarians, nurses, other health care workers and teachers of music, foreign language, special education, math or science.
• In return, the students agree to work in those occupations in South Dakota for a number of years.
• Gov. Dennis Daugaard says students who receive the scholarships give back to the state by working in critically needed occupations.

Presiding judge appointed for SD Third Circuit

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Circuit Judge Tim Tucker has been appointed presiding judge for South Dakota's Third Judicial Circuit.
• State Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson says Tucker will become the circuit's presiding judge following the retirement of Judge David Gienapp (GEE'-nap). A presiding judge handles administrative issues in a circuit.
• The Third Judicial Circuit covers 14 counties in eastern South Dakota.
• Tucker is based in Madison. He has been a circuit judge since 1987.
