1st farmer reflects on Farm Rescue's success

• DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) -- The farm aid organization Farm Rescue this fall will help its 200th farmer in the Upper Midwest. The first man to receive help from the organization says he's a little surprised that it has grown so quickly.
• Matt Biel (beel) lost a hand in a farming accident in February 2006. Farm Rescue volunteers showed up at his southwest North Dakota farm two months later to help him plant his crops. He says he was wary at first but it turned out to be a great thing.
• North Dakota-based Farm Rescue has since expanded to help farmers in need in South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota and Iowa. It has a database of about 1,000

volunteers around the country. Biel says the volunteers are a big part of Farm Rescue's success.

Utopian illustrations to be featured at USD

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- A new exhibition opening at the University of South Dakota on Monday will showcase 40 illustrations from magazines, novels and public service announcements of the late 1940s through the early 1970s.
• "Utopian Visions: Illustrations of the Mid-20th Century," will run through Sept. 21 in the school's John A. Day Gallery.
• Gallery director Alison Erazmus says the exhibit gives a look into popular American culture of the mid-20th century, the traumas of World War II, the restriction of gender roles and anxieties of the Atomic Age. She says the illustrations provide insight into a society coping with the effects of atomic power and the brutality of war.
• The illustrations were originally published in Man's Magazine, Challenge for Men Magazine, pulp and sci-fi novel covers and federally-funded public service announcements.

SD celebrating world breastfeeding week

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota health officials say the state is joining the rest of the country and more than 170 countries Aug. 1-7 in celebrating the 20th Annual World Breast-feeding Week.
• The Department of Health's Rhonda Buntrock says the commemoration offers a good reminder that breastfeeding is the ideal method of infant feeding.
• South Dakota has not yet met any of the Healthy People 2020 goals related to breastfeeding. They include increased initiation, exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding. They also include such supportive practices as the percentage of employ
