Program offsets certification costs for organic ag

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Organic agriculture producers and processors hoping to offset certification costs can apply for up to 75 percent reimbursement under a state cost-share program.
• State Dakota Department of Agriculture officials say organic producers or handlers can receive up to $750 on expenses incurred between Oct. 1, 2011, and Sept. 29, 2012. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. The application deadline is Nov. 15.
• Officials say the annual cost of certification is a major expense for both new and

established organic producers.
• State figures show that agriculture generates more than $21 billion a year in South Dakota and employs at least 173,000 state residents.

Tribute planned for officers shot in Rapid City

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The Rapid City Police Department has planned an observance to mark the one-year anniversary of the shooting deaths of two officers.
• Beginning at 4:30 p.m. on August 2, the Rapid City Police Department Honor Guard will stand in silent memorial to honor Officers Ryan McCandless and Nick Armstrong. The two officers were shot last year during what authorities described as a routine stop. A third officer, Tim Doyle, was injured.
• The public is invited to pay their respects at the site. Officers will keep watch over the site until after dark. There will not be a ceremony or public address.
• Chief Steve Allender says in a statement that there are no words that can express the loss of the two officers, so the department will remain silent to honor the two men.

Rocker Joe Walsh to perform at JazzFest Saturday

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Joe Walsh has had songs bubbling up inside him for years, but the veteran rocker just hadn't had the time for a solo project since reuniting with the Eagles for "Hell Freezes Over" in 1994.
• But a recent break by the iconic band has allowed Walsh to release "Analog Man," his first new album in 20 years.
• And the 64-year-old Walsh will share both his new works and classics Saturday night during his headline performance capping the three-day Sioux Falls JazzFest.
• The guitarist is known for his signature licks on such hits as "Rocky Mountain
