• "What you're seeing is ... we have a very robust economy, and therefore the children in North Dakota are in a much different situation than most of the kids in the rest of the United States," said Richard Rathge, a North Dakota State University researcher.
• Carole Cochran, director of South Dakota Kids Count, said she was pleased by the study's findings on economic well-being, but said there "certainly are areas for improvement," particularly in teenage death rates from vehicle crashes.
• "I think (the study) really gives us areas that we can hone in on ... and really have some things that we can try to impact," Cochran said.


Feds looking into death on ND reservation

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- The U.S. attorney's office says federal authorities are investigating a death on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
• Thirty-year-old Jeremiah Sage, of Halliday, died Thursday in New Town.
• U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon on Tuesday confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Indian Affairs are looking into the case. He declined to release details.
• Cousin Brad Sage, of Mandaree, told The Associated Press members of the family were meeting with authorities Tuesday afternoon to learn about the circumstances of the death.
• Sage says he last talked with Jeremiah about nine days ago, and his cousin didn't indicate then that anything was wrong.
• Bureau of Indian Affairs spokeswoman Nedra Darling, based in Washington, D.C., says the investigation is ongoing and cannot comment on the status of the case.

Firefighters continue battling blazes on Rosebud

• ROSEBUD, S.D. (AP) -- Firefighters are up against excruciating heat and low humidity as they continue to battle several wildfires on the Rosebud Indian Reservation Tuesday.
• Nine helicopters and air tankers are dropping water on the fires, which have engulfed more than 62 square miles, or 40,000 acres. Nearly 600 personnel are working to contain the fire.
• Lightning strikes started numerous fires on the reservation last week. Rosebud
