Legion advances to state

• The Groton American Legion baseball team will advance to the state tournament this week in Milbank. The Legion team defeated Redfield, 15-14, in a nine-inning region championship game.
• Groton jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning with the help of two Redfield errors. Groton added two more runs in the third while Redfield got on the scorebaord with four runs to make it 7-4. Redfield had a big fourth inning, scoring six runs  including a three RBI home run by Saywer Hansen as Redfield took a 10-7 lead. Groton added a run in the sixth, but Redfield also added a run as it was 11-8. Groton had three runs in the seventh and left the bases loaded. Redfield added two runs in the seventh and now it was 12-11
• In the top of the eighth, Eric May was hit by pitch to get on base, Weston Hoglund had a double, Kalen Kjellsen had a walk and Brandon Stanley hit a home run to give Groton a 15-12 lead.
• In the bottom of the eighth, Redfield left the bases loaded.. In the top of the ninth, Groton left two runners stranded on base. Redfield would score two runs in the bottom of the ninth and left two runners stranded on base as the side was retired when Drew Planteen struck out the final batter.
• Groton scored 15 runs on 14 hits and had two errors. Stanley had a home run, a double and a single, Mitch Madsen had three hits, Eric May had two hits, Kalen Kjellsen, Matt Thorson, Dalton Locke, Ryan Delzer and Weston Hoglund each had a double and Zach Herron had a single.
• Redfield scored 14 runs on 12 hits and had seven errors.
• Austin Fordham pitched for seven and one-third inning, having eight strike-outs, seven walks, one hit by pitch, 10 hits and 12 runs. Drew Planteen finished the game with seven strike-outs, two hits, six walks and two runs.
