Careflight responds accident in Groton

Careflight set ground on U.S. Highway 12 near First Street yesterday after responding to a motorcycle-car accident. The accident happened at 6:45 p.m. and according to Trooper Tom Pioske of the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a sports utility vehicle was slowing down on the highway to make a turn when the motorcyclist came up from behind, clipping the side of the SUV. A witness said the motorcyclist had swerved to try to avoid hitting the SUV. 
• The man's name, driving the motorcycle, has not been released. The Groton Rescue Squad was the first to respond to the scene with the Aberdeen Fire and Rescue coming in from Aberdeen. Careflight was dispatched and the man was airlifted to Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen. Departure from Groton was 7:23 p.m. According to bystanders, the motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet.
• The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.
• The Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident. Also responding to the scene was the Groton Police Department and the Brown County Sheriff's Office.
• Traffic on U.S. Highway 12 was blocked off at the scene as traffic was routed to 11th Avenue in Groton.
