Tabor district getting used fire truck

• TABOR, S.D. (AP) -- A rural fire department in the southeastern South Dakota town of Tabor is getting a used fire truck thanks to a $141,750 loan from United States Department of Agricultural Rural Development.
• The Tabor Rural Fire Protection District used the money to purchase a 2000 IH 2 1/2 ton fire truck with chassis and all the necessary apparatus.
• The district needed to upgrade with something that can provide at least 1,000 gallons per minute pumping capacity to meet minimum state standards. The truck will replace two different vehicles.

• Rural Development South Dakota State Director Elsie Meeks says the upgraded truck will make the fire protection district staff's jobs safer.

Badlands National Park hosts heritage celebration

• INTERIOR, S.D. (AP) -- Badlands National Park is holding its fourth annual Heritage Celebration this coming weekend.
• The event focuses on traditional Native American songs, dances and crafts, beginning with a Friday evening program at the Cedar Pass Campground Amphitheater. Jace DeCory will talk on traditional Lakota philosophy.
• The events continue Saturday near the Ben Reifel Visitor Center and then shift to the White River Visitor Center on Sunday for programming hosted by the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Authority.
• All activities are included in the park admission fee.

State DOT upgrading railroad crossings

• LESTERVILLE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Transportation is upgrading a pair of railroad crossings over state highways.
• Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad crews are scheduled to upgrade the crossing on state Highway 46 northwest of Lesterville beginning Monday.
• The crossing surface will be removed and replaced with new concrete planks. The work will take five days to complete.
• Highway 46 traffic will be detoured around the work onto Menno Road, a Yankton-Bon Homme County road two miles north of Highway 46 and east of Highway 25.
• The following Monday, July 23, crews will begin upgrading the crossing on Highway 18 near Tripp.
