Keldron woman recognized with farm award

• LEMMON, S.D. (AP) -- A Keldron woman has been named Monsanto's America's Farmers Mom of the Year for the Northwest.
• Danni Beer is one of five regional winners from across the county selected by American Agri-Women and Monsanto. She was selected based on an essay submitted on her behalf by her daughter, Bailie.
• Beer will receive a $5,000 check Saturday at the Lemmon Boss Cowman Rodeo. Monsanto says the award recognizes her contributions to family, farm and community and the leadership role she's taken to promote agriculture.


Kevin Schieffer named to SD transportation panel

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard has appointed Sioux Falls businessman Kevin Schieffer (SHEE'-fur) to the South Dakota Transportation Commission.
• Daugaard also has reappointed Mike Trucano (TRUH'-cah-noh) of Deadwood to another term on the commission that determines road construction priorities and advises the state Transportation Department on overall transportation needs. Trucano has been on the panel since 1997.
• Schieffer will join the nine-member commission on July 27 to replace Dick Gregerson of Sioux Falls.
• Schieffer currently advises and invests in start-up companies. He is a former U.S. attorney and spent 12 years as president of the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad. He also was chief of staff for former U.S. Sen. Larry Pressler.

Judge hears testimony on one-drug executions

• LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A California team of executioners is rehearsing how to use a new lethal injection to end the lives of death row prisoners with a single drug, an expert witness testified Friday.
• John McAuliffe, a former corrections officer who has been contracted to develop the new single-drug protocol, made the disclosure before a judge who is considering the Los Angeles County district attorney's bid to immediately execute two death row inmates.
• McAuliffe said the execution team would be composed of registered nurses who know how to insert IV lines.
