Google Maps Groton Streets

• People out walking or working outside on Monday often turned and stared as the small colorful Subaru hatchback with California plates drove by. It seems everyone was looking at the strange cameras mounted on the roof of the car.
• The car is part of the fleet of vehicles used by Google. Inc to map the area. Google street view is an online map that offers a 360-degree view of

roads and streets. There are 15 lenses on the cameras, taking photos at the same time.
• Google lunched the street view program in 2009, with only a few cities. On March 18, 2009, extensive coverage of the United States was added including coverage of South Dakota.
• Last week the car was spotted in Aberdeen and other Brown County areas will be covered as well. Google says it has been able to map out locations on every continent in the last five years. It will be a few months before the street view images that are currently being collected will be available.
• Those with privacy concerns can request that their car, house, or entire body be blurred out if it is captured in Google Street View once the new imagery is available. Google has the technology to blur images of license plate and faces of the people it might capture as the cars drive down public streets.
• To view the Street View maps, go to maps.google.com and drag the orange "pegman" in the upper left-hand corner to the area you would like to see.
