Today in Weather History

1998: Flash flooding occurred from Keldron and areas south, during the late afternoon and evening as result of up seven inches of rain that had fallen from slow moving thunderstorms. Willow creek and several small tributaries went out of their banks causing the inundation of low areas and county roads.

Many county roads were damaged with one farmer losing several pigs and cows as a result of the flooding.

1979: A thunderstorm pelted Midland, TX with golfball-sized hail piling up over a foot deep. Winds howled up to 75 mph, and the temperature dropped from 101 to 56 degrees in 15 minutes! Other storms struck Foard and Wilbarger counties in north Texas. Near Vernon, 80 MPH winds blew cars off Highway 287, while in Foard County Highway 70 was temporarily closed when a tractor trailer was blown over onto its side. A second tractor trailer was turned over near Crowell by winds estimated at 80 MPH.

1982: A Boeing 727 crashed in Kenner, LA. Pan Am Flight 759 took off during a thunderstorm and flew into some wind shear, probably a microburst. All 146 people onboard were killed, and 8 people on the ground were killed as the plane crashed into a neighborhood.

2003: The world's highest dew point, 95 degrees, and highest heat index reading, 172 degrees, was recorded at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia on the shore of the Persian Gulf at 3pm.
