Highway Patrol stepped up efforts ahead of holiday

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Highway Patrol says it issued 260 citations to drivers across the state on Tuesday as part of a campaign targeting motorists ahead of the July 4 holiday.
• Nearly 780 warnings also were given out to drivers during the "Operation Safe" campaign. Troopers also responded to two injury crashes, nine non-injury crashes and assisted 49 motorists stranded on the highway.
• Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Craig Price says the campaign shows that troopers are working to prevent speeding, encourage seatbelt use and reduce alco

hol-related crashes.

SD brothers get prison for killing another person

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Two Fort Thompson men have been sentenced to prison for second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson has announced that 22-year-old Alphonso Drapeau, III, has been sentenced to 17 ½ years in prison and five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to a second-degree murder charge. His brother, 20-year-old Gavin Drapeau, pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to four years and 9 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
• Both men were ordered to pay nearly $120,000 in restitution.
• Prosecutors say the two men struck the victim in the head and face before repeatedly stomping on the victim's head. The victim was pronounced dead several days later.

Man dies after diving in South Dakota lake

• WATERTOWN, S.D. (AP) -- Authorities say a man died at Lake Kampeska in northeastern South Dakota over the Fourth of July.
