• Fireworks have already been banned in several communities in the county, including Rapid City, Wall, Keystone and Hill City.
• The U.S. Forest Service and South Dakota Wildland Fire Suppression have banned open burning permits for campgrounds.

Daugaard: Drive safely over July 4 holiday

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard is asking residents to drive safely

as the Fourth of July holiday approaches, and South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers are out in force.
• The patrol says the stepped-up effort comes after a weekend during which five fatal crashes resulted in eight deaths.
• Daugaard says that nearly all crashes can be avoided, but every person must take personal responsibility and do his or her part. This includes wearing a seatbelt, obeying speed limits and other traffic laws, avoiding distractions when driving and not drinking and driving.
• Two people died on South Dakota roads last year during the July Fourth holiday reporting period. Another 42 people were injured in 127 crashes in 2011.

Rapid City woman pleads guilty to bank embezzling

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A Rapid City woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling from the bank where she worked.
• Twenty-year-old Krissa Shewey is accused of stealing checks from mailboxes in December and January and then cashing them at the bank.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Shewey faces up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when she is sentenced on Nov. 16.
