• Oglala Sioux President John Yellow Bird Steele declared June 26, 2012, as "Russell Means Day" to honor Means' "accomplishments, dedication and patriotism" to the tribe.
• The signed proclamation was given to Means at the conclusion of a walk on Tuesday that commemorated the many people killed on the reservation during the 1970s.

South Dakota man sentenced for shooting at fiancee

• FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man initially accused of trying to murder his fiancιe has been sentenced on a lesser charge to which he pleaded guilty.
• Thirty-nine-year-old Ronald Berens Jr., of Fort Pierre, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on an aggravated assault charge in the April 29 incident in which authorities say he fired a gun three times -- once inside the residence he shared with his fiancιe and twice outside.
• One of the shots hit a home. No one was hurt. Authorities say the shooting was sparked by a domestic dispute.

Woman rescued after fall at cliff near Rapid City

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A Rapid City woman had to be rescued after falling at the cliff at Falling Rock in triple-digit temperatures.
• Authorities say the 18-year-old woman fell about 20 feet on Tuesday and injured

her knee. She was unable to climb out of the canyon and became dehydrated. Paramedics got some fluids into her before using a basket to lift her out.
• The woman was taken to a hospital to be checked. A family member said she was OK.
• Authorities did not say what the woman was doing at the site west of Rapid City that is popular with climbers.
