Officials to discuss pine beetles, fire danger

• KEYSTONE, S.D. (AP) -- Officials from Pennington County are hosting community meetings next week to inform residents about fire danger associated with areas of the Black Hills affected by pine beetles.
• The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says local and county officials will be giving presentations on fire danger and behavior and law enforcement response to evacuations. They also will be discussing emergency preparedness, a reimbursement program and other topics.
• The first meeting is scheduled for Monday at the Community Center in Keystone.

On Tuesday, a meeting will be held at City Hall in Hill City.

Mission man gets more than 5 years for beating

• MISSION, S.D. (AP) -- A 23-year-old Mission man has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for his role in a July 2010 beating.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Clayton Paul High Pipe Jr. received the sentence this week after being convicted of one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
• The guilty plea stems from a July 2010 incident when, while walking in Mission, the victim was randomly attacked by the defendant and two other individuals. As a result of the attack, the victim suffered two fractures to his jaw, multiple bruises and abrasions to his arms and legs, and had to have an endotracheal tube placed due to a compromised airway.
• High Pipe was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal to begin serving his sentence.

• Lemmon man killed in construction accident

• LEMMON, S.D. (AP) -- A 58-year-old Lemmon man was killed when a packer rolled and he was pinned as he worked along South Dakota Highway 73.
• Kirby Chapman with the Perkins County Sheriff's Office says Steven Bootz was driving the packer Monday morning when it rolled into a ditch, pinning him. The Rapid City Journal reports that Bootz died at the scene.
• Bootz was employed by Zandstra Construction of Rapid City. The company has a contract to widen the shoulders on the highway between Faith and Meadow.
• Darcy Torres with Zandstra tells The Associated Press that the death is a tragic accident. She says authorities are investigating what happened.
