American Legion Riders to Host Meeting in Groton

• Over the last coupe of years, motorcycle riding has fast become a popular activity. If you are a motorcycle enthusiast with connections to the American Legion, you may want to check out the American Legion Riders (ALR) informational meeting at the Groton Legion hall on Thursday, June 21 at 8 pm.
• The Warner post mixes fun rides in with their summer meetings - each month from April to Sept, they ride to a Legion Post in the area and have a short business meeting there over supper. For the month of June, the meeting site selected is Groton. The members will be on hand to answer any questions about the ALR, including

how to start a local chapter or join one of the existing ones, and share information about upcoming events.
• Chapter 6 is sponsored by the Warner post, and was constituted in 2010 and is open to all members of the SD American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion, who share an enthusiasm for the sport of motorcycling, no matter which post, unit, or squadron they belong to. It currently the post has 8 members, whose Legion memberships cover the area from Stratford to Cressbard, and from Wolsey to Aberdeen. State wide, there are 160 members of the ALR in the 9 current chapters. Nationally there are over 106,000 members in over 1000 chapters.
• The American Legion Riders (ALR) are a nationally recognized program of The American Legion that encourages the sport of motorcycling while also furthering the goals of The American Legion. There are 9 chapters of the ALR in South Dakota.
• True to the Legion's grassroots tradition, each chapter manages its programs at the post level, where the best ideas are born. Common programs, however, often include motorcycle safety, and support/awareness of POW/MIA issues. Nationally, the ALR has a primary focus on supporting the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund -- a trust fund built and maintained by The American Legion, with an ultimate goal to provide a full college scholarship for the child of any service member who gives their life while defending our country.
• Riders in all states have escorted military units returning home from combat tours overseas, conducted massive cross-country fundraiser events for wounded warriors from all services, and have raised millions of dollars for countless local, state and national charities.
