Sidewalk project passes first hearing

• The public hearing on the Safe Route to School Route was held at the Monday night city council meeting. Only Doug Sombke was present from the public.
• The city received a $140,000 grant for sidewalk and the school will get $13,000 for education purposes to promote healthy exercise. "The school is gun hoe on this," said Finance Officer Anita Lowary. "Kids will be given pedometers and prizes given for walking the most." Sombke said that he and Mel walk a lot and they like to use the sidewalks because it is safer.
• Another hearing will be held before it is set in stone. The next hearing will be held after the engineer gets the preliminary plans done.

Other City Council Actions

• The council voted to vacate Hayes Street, located at the west end of Third Street and to vacate the alley on the north side of a Pheasant Ridge Apartments.
• In lieu of sponsoring a golf team, the city will donate $240 to the Chamber Golf Tournament.
• Paul Kosel was authorized to attend a metering/load management school in Bloomington, Minn., in September.
• Letters will be sent to vehicle owners whose vehicles have not been licensed for several years. They will have 30 days to get them licensed, removed or taken out of sight such as put into a garage. Coverage by tarp is not permissible.
• The Legion Auxiliary was given permission to install a monument at the cemetery. It will be placed at the east end of the dead end sidewalk.
• Sunday and Memorial Day alcohol sales used to be allowed; however that has now changed. A city ordinance will be required to allow sales on those days, even if food is served in those businesses.
• City Finance Officer Anita Lowary gave a report on the finance officer school that she attended last week.

Rip N' Ravel

Bonnie Erdmann hosted  the May meeting of Rip N'Ravel CFEL club in her home. Flag salute and pledges were recited. Upcoming events were noted, and Brown County Fair duties were finalized. The State CFEL meeting to be held in Aberdeen in September was discussed. Ella Johnson presented the lesson on Emergency Management. She stressed a pre-arranged disaster plan for families. The next meeting is to be September 4 for a dinner meeting.
