The Life of Larry Wattier

• The funeral for Larry W. Wattier will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Langford. Rev. Charlie Bunk will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Langford.
• Visitation will be 5-7:00 Wednesday at the church in Langford, with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.
• Larry died Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Marshall County Healthcare

Center, Britton.
• Larry Wayne Wattier was born October 24, 1934 to Laraina and Mildred (Hanson) Watteir near Butler, SD. He attended elementary and high school at Bristol, graduating in May of 1952. He worked for his uncle, Fred Wattier, at the Red Owl grocery store until joining the U.S. Army in February of 1954. He completed basic training at Ft. Riley, Kansas, and later was assigned to Seoul, Korea. While in Korea, he was chosen "Soldier of the Month" from his battalion, and was honorably discharged in January of 1956. He returned home and began his college education at Northern State University, Aberdeen, receiving his Bachelor's of Science degree in May of 1959 and Master's of Science degree in August 1961. He also did post-graduate work at the University of Wyoming, Laramie.
• He married the love of his life, Leona Evangeline Skaare, on April 2, 1955, at Bergen Lutheran Church, rural Bristol. They lived in Aberdeen while receiving his college education and later moved to Alexandria, SD, where he was employed as an Industrial Art instructor for the Alexandria Public School. In 1961 the couple moved to Langford and spent 40 years as an administrator for the Langford Public Schools, retiring in 2000. Larry was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Langford. He had served in various offices over the years and was a life-long member of the church choir. He was a member of the Henry Osness Post #141 of the American Legion of Langford and held various offices in the organization. In 2009 Larry became a member of the newly organized Langford Community Foundation and served as its treasurer.
• Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Leona, Langford; his children: Timothy Watteir, Sioux Falls, SD; Kevin (Julie) Wattier, Long Beach, CA; Kris (Scott) Tobin, Langford; and Lori Wattier, Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren: Erin, Carlene, and Nathan Wattier, Jameson, Brennan, and Miranda Wattier, and Jeffrey Tobin; eight great-grandchildren; his twin sister, Lynn Minninger, Bellingham, WA, and his sister Joanne McHugh, Portland, Maine.
• He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Bernetta Murphy, Aberdeen, and a great-granddaughter, Jordyn Rae.
