Weekend fire destroys SD home, prompts evacuations

• ROCKERVILLE, S.D. (AP) -- Authorities say lightning might have sparked a fire that destroyed a home in southwest South Dakota over the weekend and prompted the evacuation of nearby residents.
• Rockerville Fire Capt. Gail Schmidt says the two people who lived in the home near Rockerville were not home when the fire broke out late Saturday, but a dog and four cats are believed to have died in the blaze.
• Nearly 60 firefighters from several agencies responded to the fire. Schmidt says they focused on stopping it from spreading to other homes. The Highway Patrol

evacuated residents from about half a dozen houses and others left voluntarily.

Director of Emergency Medical Services retires
