Trial for man accused of attempted fetal homicide

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- An August trial has been scheduled for a man accused of spiking his pregnant girlfriend's drink to cause an abortion.
• Alfredo Vargas is charged with attempted fetal homicide. Investigators say he put a herb in his girlfriend's drink between February and May 2010. The "blue cohosh" herb is used to make tea that helps to induce labor.
• The 34-year-old Vargas faces up to 25 years in prison if he's convicted.
• The woman became suspicious of her drinks and had police test one, and they discovered the herb. She eventually gave birth to a healthy baby.

• Vargas was extradited from Puerto Rico to Rapid City, S.D., for trial.
