• Applications must be submitted by Oct. 1 for projects eligible for grants under the federal Clean Water Act.
• Officials expect about $2 million will be available for South Dakota projects. The grants from the federal Environmental Protection Agency require a local funding match of 40 percent.
• The program provides grants to government agencies and some nonprofit organizations to reduce water pollution from nonpoint sources, such as polluted runoff from urban, agricultural and forest lands. The state historically has used the money mostly for projects aimed at reducing pollution to meet standards in streams, rivers and lakes.
• Pollution sources include runoff from streets, farmland, livestock operations and
