SD commission designates I-90 Purple Heart Trail

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Transportation Commission has agreed to designate Interstate 90 as the Purple Heart Trail to honor military personnel killed or wounded in combat.
• The Military Order of the Purple Heart requested the designation. The Purple Heart Trail is aimed at creating a system of roads, bridges and other monuments that pay tribute to those who received the Purple Heart Medal while in military service.

• The state Transportation Department says 45 states and Guam have designated parts of their road systems as Purple Heart Trails.
• Markers will be placed at rest areas along I-90.
• Transportation Commission member Robert Benson, a retired National Guard brigadier general, says he wants recipients of the Purple Heart Medal who stop at a rest area to see that South Dakota cares about them.
