Daugaard urges safety on SD highways this weekend

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard is urging motorists to follow speed limits and wear their seatbelts during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
• Although there were no fatalities last year on South Dakota highways during Memorial Day weekend, 30 people were injured in more than 120 crashes. The State Office of Highway Safety says eight of those crashes were alcohol-related.
• Daugaard also is asking motorists to avoid drinking alcohol and driving, to slow down through construction zones and to avoid other distractions while driving.

Fargo lawmaker heads medical marijuana initiative

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Supporters of legalizing medical marijuana in North Dakota turned in a proposed initiative Tuesday to put the issue on the November ballot.
• With voters' approval, the initiative would allow someone who suffers from a debilitating illness to use marijuana with a doctor's permission. It lists cancer, post-traumatic stress disorder, glaucoma and other illnesses as examples of debilitating conditions.
