The Life of Sheila Garness

• The funeral for Sheila Garness, 76, of Enemy Swim Lake and Sun City West, Ariz., will be 2 p.m., Friday, May 18 at the Presbyterian Church, Groton.  Monsignor Marvin McPhee will officiate.  Burial will follow in Union Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
• Visitation will be held at the chapel on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.  Reverend Bill Duncan will officiate.
• Sheila died May 11, 2012 at Del Webb Memorial Hospital in Sun

City West following a brief illness. 
• Sheila Ann was born in Groton on March 26, 1936 to Alfred and Luree (Taylor) Paetznick.  She attended and graduated from Groton High School continuing her education at Northern State Teacher's College.  After receiving her degree, she taught English and directed plays in Claremont and Groton.  Sheila was instrumental in starting the Groton High School debate program. 
• She was united in marriage with Leonard Garness on June 15, 1959 and the couple made their home in Groton.  Sheila taught for several years before devoting her time to her family and the funeral home.  They retired to their home on Enemy Swim Lake in 1999 and eventually began wintering in Sun City West. 
• Sheila was an active member of the Presbyterian Church serving for many years as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, and participated in Presbyterian Women.  She was involved in Eastern Star, PEO and several bridge clubs.  Sheila enjoyed her time at Enemy Swim Lake, visiting and entertaining family and friends.
• Celebrating her life are her husband of 52 years, her children, Leigh Ann (Randy) Giedt of Sioux Falls; Patty Garness of Forest Lake, Minnesota; Dr. Charlie (Ken) Klauer of Blacksburg, Virginia; Thor (Emily) Garness of Omaha, Nebraska, and five grandchildren: Dr. Jim Giedt, Nicholas Giedt, Garreth Klauer, Samantha and Allie Garness.  Sheila is also survived by her brother-in-laws, Dr. Winston Odland of Ipswich, Roger (Jesse) Garness of Mitchell, and Dennis (Alice) Garness of Evansville, Indiana, sister-in-law Carolyn Garness of Dassel, Minnesota, several nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
• Preceding her in death were her parents and her sister, Sondra Odland.
• Honorary Casketbearers will be all of Sheila's friends.
• Casketbearers will be Jim Giedt, Nicholas Giedt, Gary Petersen, Robb Roettele, Bryant Odland and Richard Kolker.
