FCCLA members attend state convention

• Members from the Groton FCCCLA Chapter recently attended the state convention of the South Dakota Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) which was held on April 22nd - 24th in Sioux Falls, SD at the Ramkota Convention Center.  Members from across the state of South Dakota came together to attend sessions, workshops, compete in STAR events (Students Taking Action with Recognition), and run for leadership positions.  On the Sunday night opening session, members received a keynote message from Jamie Utt.  Throughout Monday, members could attend workshops presented by South Dakota State University Extension Services, Peer Education Teams, and Children's Miracle Network presentation by Amy Sumner.  Ten members participated in STAR Events from the Groton FCCLA Chapter.  The following members presented Illustrated Talks and were awarded the following placements: Marah Smith, gold; Ellie Harms, gold; Carlie Peterson and Heather Koens, silver; Haley Unzen and Tori Bjerke, gold; Kennedy Clark and Katie LaMee, silver; and Amanda Koens, silver.  Jordyn Opsahl received a bronze for her presentation for National Programs in Action.   The following students were also awarded for their work in "Power of One", Tori Bjerke, Haley Unzen, Kennedy Clark, Breanna Marzahn, Katie LaMee, and Amanda Koens.
• South Dakota FCCLA chapters from across the state raised money for Children's Miracle Network during the 2011-2012 school year. This year South Dakota FCCLA chapters raised over $20,500 to be used by CMN in South Dakota.
• FCCLA was first established in 1945 and in South Dakota in 1946.  Family has served as the focus of this organization since its establishment.  It is a career-technical student organization.  This organization prepares youth to assume their adult roles in society as wage earners, community leaders, and caring family members, by giving them the "life skills" they need to thrive in their communities, careers, and families.
