• SD Democrats falling behind
• If you're a Democrat running for statewide office in?South Dakota, the numbers aren't in your favor. May 1 voter registration numbers compiled by the state elections office show Democratic voter registration stood at 186,073, which is 20 voters fewer than the April 1 tally that was at the second-lowest point in at least four years.
• Republicans, on the other hand, totaled 234,800 as of May 1, up 642 over the

previous month while independents were at 87,404, an increase of 426 since April 1. Twenty voters one way or another isn't a major shift in the political force and it's possible in the next month Democrats could not only make up those 20 lost voters but add more than that. That, however, is small comfort.
• South Dakota has a long history of sending Republicans to Pierre. There have only been a handful of Democrat governors in state history with
