Suriname soldiers visit SD National Guard

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Four soldiers from the South American country of Suriname (SUR'-ih-nahm) recently met with South Dakota National Guard soldiers to exchange ideas on managing responses to emergencies or natural disasters.
• The soldiers from Suriname visited Rapid City this week.
• Maj. Kathleen Dirk, coordinator of the South Dakota National Guard's State Partnership Program, says the joint operations centers in South Dakota and Suriname are different, but both deal with natural disasters.
• Dirk says the Surinamese built a joint operations center three years ago and are

seeking information on how to make it more streamlined. She says the Surinamese are mostly concerned with how to use their joint operations center to respond to flash floods.
• A joint operations center serves primarily as an information hub where emergency operations are tracked and coordinated.
