Safety is writing rules that will clarify the legal status of 85 octane gasoline in South Dakota and specify how it must be labeled.
• David Pfahler (FAY'-lur), director of the state Office of Weights and Measures, says a recent review of state laws and rules determined that the sale of 85 octane gasoline is not legal anywhere in South Dakota, even though it has been commonly accepted as a fuel for high altitudes in western South Dakota.
• The proposed rules will clarify that 85 octane gasoline is legal in South Dakota. But the rules also will require labeling so customers will know the fuel might not meet standards for their vehicles.
• Pfahler says most modern vehicle engines require a minimum octane level of 87.
