Report: SD college athletes equal to non-athletes

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A new report for the Board of Regents examining academic performance of college athletes at South Dakota's six public universities shows athletes have higher grade point averages than non-athletes but lag in proficiency exams.
• The board has studied the academic performance of athletes since 2002. The most recent study examines the 2010-2011 year and will be presented to the Board of Regents at a meeting next week. The report found that athletes had an average grade point of 2.73, well above the average 2.47 for non-athletes.

• But proficiency exams showed athletes scored lower in reading, science and writing compared to non-athletes. Athletes had a slightly higher score than other students in mathematics.
