County abandons road maintenance for Hwy 12E

• The Groton City Council was informed Monday night that the Brown County Maintenance Department has abandoned any plans for road maintenance on the county road going east of Groton.
• It is the road east of Railroad Avenue from the railroad tracks to US Highway 12. "I was informed by the county that they will no longer maintain it," said City Finance Officer Anita Lowary. "They will let it go back to gravel."
• If that should happen, it would mean very dusty conditions for the golfers on the Olive Grove Golf Course and for travelers and joggers who use the road. The county has offered to give the stretch of road to the city; however, the city limits are on the north side of the road; thus the road is in the county.
• The road was originally a state highway before new US 12 was constructed. At the time, the county took over the road because they wanted a good road for the city/county fire department. The county took it over in 1983 and the new fire hall was built in 1984. The county has taken the position that the road serves no county property. The council has taken the position of not accepting the road. "We don't need another road to take care," said Mayor Roy Olson.
• Meanwhile State Highway 37 going through Groton will be reconstructed in 2016, as part of the state highway plan. There will be new storm sewers, new curb and gutter, new sidewalks and a new street.
• And one more note on streets, A.P. & Sons Construction, Inc., of Summit, was awarded the First Street Reconstruction Bid. The tally came to $1,395,834.25, which is below the engineer's estimate of $1,420,826.70. There were four bidders. Work is
