SD board halts boost in livestock inspection fee

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Brand Board has withdrawn an earlier decision that would have raised the livestock inspection fee by 20 cents.
• The board last month voted to increase the brand inspection fee from 80 cents to $1 a head, but the boost had not yet taken effect.
• The board's executive director, Larry Stearns, says the board decided Friday not to go ahead with the increase. He says the board will meet May 15 with representatives of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association and the Livestock Marketing Association, which had opposed the increase.
• The Brand Board charges the fee for checking brands on cattle, horses and other

livestock west of the Missouri River. The inspections are conducted to prevent theft when livestock is sold or moved out of the inspection area.
